The CNI Battery is a highly reliable SEM-E format backup battery subsystem designed for the F-22 Raptor’s Communication, Navigation, and Instrumentation (CNI) Integrated Avionics Rack (IAR). Fully flight qualified for harsh environmental, electromagnetic and power bus conditions experienced in the fighter jet’s avionics bay, this Line Replaceable Module (LRM) integrates dual-redundant removable Lithium batteries with capabilities to maintain the aircraft’s encryption keys for the Common Integrated Processors (CIPs) and Digital Crypto Processors (DCPs) for at least 40 days under the worse-case thermal conditions without a re-charge. The unit accepts 270Vdc from the IAR backplane to output 5Vdc for up to seven devices and integrates an I2C data interface with onboard microprocessor to remotely monitor and report battery status, modes and remaining battery capacity. Either battery pack can be removed from the rack-mounted module’s base unit without interrupting power to the load. This allows for easy replacement of field-replaceable non-rechargeable batteries while the unit stays on the jet, replacement of the rechargeable battery pack or off-aircraft charging.
